The Author's Chair

The Author's Chair

The student's had the opportunity to task a risk and share the beginning of their story we have been written with the rest of the class. I was so proud to see some students step out of their comfort zone and share. Here are some pictures of a few students that shared.

Athenian Democracy Event
Our class traveled back in time to about 450 BC in Athens, Greece. The students were given a role in Athenian society. Their role determined the decision making power, or influence that they had. The 5 citizens of our class had the power to vote and make a decision that affected the entire class... just like in ancient Athens. Our citizens were influenced by the metics or their trusted slaves to make a decision, but come voting time they had all the power. They voted for one FREE block instead of a core subject, at the cost of some of their tokens and DT time of their slaves.
It was a wonderful learning experience for us all!

This letter was sent home with your child today. In case it didn't make it home, I decided to post it as well! :)

Hello Parents & Guardians of 6B,

Happy New Year! I trust you all had a wonderful break and spent some great time with family and friends.  I had an enjoyable and restful holiday, and am excited for what is to come in 2017 with our class. I have already seen tremendous growth in the class over the last few months, and I know there is a lot more to come.

I want to communicate a few  important items to you so we can continue to partner in your child’s learning and so they can have a successful experience at school.

Home Reading - Students have been bringing home their home reading duotang since October and it is expected that it comes back on Monday mornings, completed and signed by an adult who can verify their reading. As you know, I do not send home consistent homework, but it is an expectation that grade 6 students read a minimum of 30 minutes a day. I know life happens and students have other involvements, so I do understand if a day or two is missed her and there. Students will have to make up the time they lost and spend a lunch hour reading if their home reading is not complete.

Asking for help - Please remind your child, as I do often, if they are struggling with something we have been learning in class, to always ask for extra help. I am more than willing to make time to ensure all students are understanding and making progress in their learning.

Outdoor Shoes – Students are expected to remove their outdoor shoes at the door every time they enter the school. Our custodians do an amazing job with keeping our school clean and we want to do our part to help with that.  Some students have been having a tough time remembering this, so please remind your child.

Bringing Items from Home – Toys, Collectable Cards and Other Treasures
As mentioned on our school website, under student expectations, we ask that your child will
please keep those ‘special items’ at home.  They are very easily lost or broken in school and I have noticed this to cause a distraction in student’s learning. If there are special circumstances where students can bring in these items, you will be notified.

Thank you for your continual support and partnership.
Please do not hesitate to call, email or stop by our class.

Sincerely,
Miss Jenkins
