Leaf Discovery
Students were asked to bring in leaves and were given the opportunity to explore the differences and variation of them. We looked at the type of leaf, the shape, the margin and in some casses the leaf arrangement. Here is a look at our experiences.

As we begin to work on place value in math, students had to create numbers and then we would practice saying it correctly as a class. We worked our way up from millions, to billions and then even to trillions for a challenge.

Building Stamina in Our Reading

Students are working their way up to longer periods of time where they can find a spot in the class with 1 book, 1 spot, focused, silent, independent reading. The hope is that through their focus this will improve their comprehension as we begin to make connections in our reading, predict, infer and so much more.

The new reading spot... under my desk. :)

LEADER IN ME!

Students were divided into groups today and assigned 1 out of the 7 Habits.
They had to present it to the class. Here are a couple of the groups! :)

Students will continue to learn/review the 7 Habits and find ways to apply it to their lives.
Ask your students about these habits!!

Thank you Parents and Grandparents who made it out to Meet The Teacher Night! I loved getting the opportunity to meet/meet again and chat about your child and this next year! If you were not able to make it, I hope I get a chance to connect with you in the near future!

Thanks,

Sketch-a-Tree

Today we kicked off our first Science unit, Trees & Forests! Students had the opportunity to create "I Wonder" statements and put it onto "Our WONDERful Tree". It now looks amazing with all the colourful leaves!

We then went outside to Sketch-a-Tree. Students got to choose a tree to study and sketch. Students were asked to look at the details of the tree, for example, the shape, the branches, the leaves. I think they all enjoyed their time enjoying the sunshine and creating beautiful drawings!

#ThrowbackTuesday

Now that I have permission to post some photos of your children, I want to share what we did on Thursday and Friday. :)

Thursday your Grade 6 children were amazing leaders as they took the new,shy and tired Grade 1s on a school wide scavenger hunt. I was so impressed with how they jumped right into this leadership role. Even our brand new students to the school took on this challenge! Way to go!!

There is one very tired Grade 1er!

Friday we did a team building activity called Spaghetti Towers. Teams were in groups and had to share ideas, come up with a plan, and then create the tallest free standing tower they could. There were given 20 strands of spaghetti, 2 marshmallows, 1 meter of tape and 1 1/2 of string.
We brainstormed about what a TEAM is all about and came up with...
1) Working together 2) Group of people that achieve greater than themselves 3) Cooperation 4) Respect everyone/listen to all ideas 5) Have goals.
There were many challenges that came with this task and they rose to the occasion!

6B Canadian Pekins

Today I announced the type of Duck our class would be. Since we are the Dansereau Ducks, each teacher chose a different type to be represented in our class. Our duck type is the American Pekin. Nothing against the United States... but we thought we would change it to Canadian Pekin.
We created a chant and named our class mascot that is beautifully drawn on our poster. Our mascot's name is Ducky Momo! She will stay at the front of the class usually, but will take a spot on the desk of students when they have a birthday. Since Alex's birthday was July 31st, Ducky Momo got to sit on his desk first! :) We got to announce our chant to the whole school at the first assembly. It goes as followed...

First Day Success!!!

Hello Parents & Students of 6B!

Today was a wonderful, crazy and energetic day (for both the students and I)! The day seemed to end before it even began! It was filled with get to know you activities, taking duck buddy photos (ask your child about that one), organizing where our materials will be for the year and finally a school wide scavenger hunt! Our grade 6s paired up with the brand new, uneasy, tired grade 1s and worked with them on the scavenger hunt. I was so proud of the leadership qualities they displayed while taking the little ones around the school! We will have many leadership opportunities as the year continues.

* Please take time to sign your child's agenda, as well as sign and return the pack of forms that were sent home. The quicker I have those forms back the quicker I can get photos up on the blog to share with you! :)
* Also ask your child about their "All About Me Bag" as they will be bringing in a few items from home to share with their classmates.

It was great meeting some of the parents/grandparents this morning. If you weren't able to come in today, please feel free to pop by at the beginning or end of another day.  If work or other commitment don't permit that, I hope to see you on September 8th for our Meet the Teacher Night at 6-7.

Thanks for taking time to read this! :)

Finally my class is filled with kids!! :D
